Practical starting point for hiking in Kærgård Plantation, with red deer and marked routes.
At Vejers, the North Sea lies open and wide in front of the dunes, while Vejers Plantation begins just behind the holiday area. This makes the place especially easy to use: sandy beach, dune landscape, heath, lakes and plantation are close enough together that a beach trip can easily turn into a walk among pine trees and open stretches.
Vejers Plantation is one of the core areas in the Oksbøl Red Deer Reserve. The red deer forage on Kallesmærsk Heath and find shelter in the plantation’s dense growth, so you quickly feel that this is not only a holiday area, but also the animals’ landscape. From the parking area by Vejers Havvej it is about a 10-minute walk to Fårehuset, which is set up for observing red deer and can also be used as a picnic house.
The beach is a classic west coast beach with heavy surf, waves and rip channels. The water can become deep quickly, and the currents change with the tide, weather and deposits. That is part of the place’s character: lots of space, lots of sky, and a sea that does not behave like a lake.
Near Vejers lies the edge of the Oksbøl Shooting and Training Area, which is used for the Army's training, exercises, and live firing. Public access depends on the Danish Armed Forces' activities, and the beach between Vejers and Blåvand may also be closed.
Keep an eye on information boards, barriers, and markings. During live firing, red balloons or lights are used, among other things, and Kallesmærsk Heath is permanently closed due to the risk from unexploded ammunition.
Strib Sø is located in the northern part of Vejers Plantage, close to Ålestrøm. Fishing is permitted here, but the signage on site should be checked for local rules.
The place is referred to as two lakes, a larger and a smaller one, where fishing is allowed in both. The water contains, among other species, pike, perch, and eel, and the depth can reach around 10 meters. A fishing license is required for anglers from 18 years old up to state pension age.
