Torre de Verger

On the edge of the Tramuntana

Torre de Verger stands on the cliff edge by the road between Banyalbufar and Estellencs, where the northwest coast drops steeply towards the sea. It is a place where the view comes before the explanation: cliffs, coastline and the open Mediterranean lie right in front of the tower, and in clear weather the view reaches towards Sa Dragonera.

The short access makes an impression

The tower itself is reached on foot via a small bridge and steps leading to its base. The short approach is part of the experience, because you clearly sense how exposed the tower’s position is. The information does not say for certain whether you can always enter the tower itself, so first and foremost expect a viewpoint and a close look at the structure.

Smoke, fire and horns

The tower was part of a warning system along the Tramuntana coast. By day smoke was used, by night fire, and when enemy ships appeared the guards also had to blow horns and pass the message on towards Palma. Torre de Verger could both receive signals from Sa Dragonera and send them on to other coastal towers, so the small tower functioned as one link in a larger chain.
