Torre de Cala en Basset

View over Es Freu

Torre de Cala en Basset stands starkly positioned above the rocky coast at Cala en Basset, with the sea, the Freu strait and Sa Dragonera as the main focal points. Here, the tower’s location makes immediate sense: you can follow the coastline, look towards Sant Elm and understand why this particular point was worth watching.

The hike from Sant Elm

The tower can be reached on foot from Sant Elm. Described routes are around 6.5 km out and back, and the walk is described as easy, though with a rockier final stretch down towards the tower. It is therefore a manageable excursion for hikers, but not just a quick roadside stop.

A tower without beacons

Torre de Cala en Basset was part of Mallorca’s coastal defence against attacks from the sea and kept watch over the passage through Freu de Sa Dragonera. What is distinctive is that it is described as a defensive tower, but not a signal tower; in other words, no fire signals were sent from here onwards along the coast.

Later, the tower lost its military role, but the site gained a function again during the Spanish Civil War, when it was used for airspace control. The small added building beside the tower belongs to this more recent part of the story.
