Tipper Peninsula - Værnengene and Tipperne

The Hunting Cabins at Værnengene

The hunting cabins at Værnengene are not neat rows of summer houses, but 327 small hunting and fishing cabins in three dense clusters. Many were built from recycled materials such as fish crates, surplus timber, chicken coops and old railway carriages.

The cabins are private, so they are experienced from the outside. They were once close to being removed, but today they are regarded as a cultural heritage site worth preserving: homemade, modest and a little crooked in a landscape where the birds still set the pace.

Tipperne

The Værn Tower at Værnengene

The Værn Tower is one of the places where Værnengene is easiest to read: flat, wet meadows, reed beds, tidal channels, and the southern part of Ringkøbing Fjord lie open before the tower.

The tower was inaugurated in the summer of 2021 and serves both as a birdwatching tower, viewpoint, and picnic shelter. From here, you can look for geese, ducks, waders, and spoonbills without entering the sensitive areas. Inside the tower are landscape friezes by Jens Overgaard Christensen.

Nordladen: Toilets and Bird Introduction

Nordladen is the practical stop on the Tipper Peninsula: here you will find parking, a nature exhibition and two toilets, one of which is accessible.

The exhibition uses Jens Gregersen’s illustrations to tell the story of the yearly cycle of birdlife, the landscape of the Tipper Peninsula and Værnengene, as well as the area’s hunting huts and hunting traditions. A brief key to the flat landscape outside.
