The mysterious Seven-Year Lakes get their name for the simple reason that they are not always there. Since ancient times, people have noticed that the lakes appeared approx. every seventh year, or perhaps they simply used the magical number 7 for the inexplicable.
The fact is that the lakes appear and disappear with the level of the groundwater. And even though large amounts of precipitation cause the groundwater level to rise, this does not necessarily mean swelling lakes. The groundwater table has its own "hills and valleys", which is why the Seven-Year Lakes are quite unpredictable.
Trails
Several trails are marked in the area. The footpath up and down the row of dunes on the south side of the Seven-Year Lakes is the most exciting, as it offers many truly beautiful views over the lake surfaces.
