Aviation history with engine noise

Near Stauning, the airport and aviation museum stand side by side, so Danish aviation history is not just glass cases and old photos. Danmarks Flymuseum presents both civil and military aviation, and the place describes itself as a living and flying museum.

In the halls, you encounter everything from gliders and vintage aircraft to fighter jets, helicopters, engines, exhibits and a large number of aircraft models. This makes the place easy to explore for children, but there are also enough details for those who want to understand the development of Danish aviation and aircraft production.

When the old planes can still take off

What makes Stauning special is that the collection is located at an active airport. Many of the museum’s aircraft are preserved in airworthy condition, and in the summer period the museum holds evening flights, where historic aircraft are exercised and can be seen in the air over the runway.

Today, the airport is used mainly for training, taxi and private flying, and on the premises you will find flying clubs, drone training, businesses and the KZ & Vintage Aircraft Club. So this is not a closed-down backdrop, but an active aviation environment.

West Jutland Airport is located a few kilometres northwest of Stauning town by Ringkøbing Fjord. The museum has its own address on the airport grounds, and the active operation means that ordinary visitors should stay in the public areas indicated by the museum and the airport.
