Stauning Harbour lies on the eastern side of Ringkøbing Fjord, where harbour life still has a quiet, practical tone. Boats, fishing and fjord landscape are all close together here, and in the innermost part there are small fishermen’s huts that give the harbour its special character.
From the harbour you can follow a short route along a gravel path and boardwalk through reed beds out towards the fjord. Along the way, the view opens towards Holmsland Klit, and down by the shoreline there are tables and benches for a break with the fjord right in front of you.
The reed beds are not just a green edge around the water. Yellow iris, great burnet and meadowsweet are among the plants mentioned here, and the reed warbler is one of the birds you may be lucky enough to notice in the reeds.
By the harbour is Restaurant Stauning Strand, which highlights local ingredients and the view over the fjord as part of the place. The harbour can also be reached by cycle path from both Skjern and Ringkøbing.
The fjord has had great importance for life in Stauning, and the harbour environment is still closely linked to leisure fishing and hunting. It is a place where the old fjord livelihood is not gone, but rather has remained in a smaller and quieter form.
