Skaven Beach

Shallow water and calm fjord

Skaven Beach is a fjord beach, where the water rises gently, and the beach lies flat towards Ringkøbing Fjord. This makes the place especially easy for families with small children: there is sand underfoot, shallow water and a bathing pier if you would rather go straight into the water.

The beach does not have the big waves of the North Sea, but the more subdued rhythm of the fjord. On the other hand, the wind can still be felt, and the place is also mentioned as suitable for windsurfing.

Harbour right by the beach

Part of the experience is that beach and harbour are close to each other. Skaven Harbour is small and peaceful, with a kiosk, restaurant, playground and the opportunity to buy freshly caught fish. This makes it easy to switch between swimwear, ice cream, boats and fjord views without making the day more complicated than necessary.

Birds, dogs and bathing water

South of the beach, reeds and scrub line the shore, and Ringkøbing Fjord is an important area for waterbirds. The Skjern River flows out about 2 km north of Skaven Beach, and the fjord landscape here therefore has more the character of low wetland than a classic sea beach.

Dogs are allowed on the beach on a leash. The municipality advises against bathing during rain and for up to 72 hours afterwards, and bathing is also discouraged at the outlet of Langkjær Grøft south of the beach, especially after precipitation.
