Skallingen

Skallingen is a peninsula in the northern Wadden Sea north of Esbjerg and is approximately 7 km long. It is relatively new, self-formed land that first emerged after a storm surge in 1634 through the sea’s deposition of sand, and it is still undergoing transformation. Skallingen is protected and owned by the Danish Nature Agency.

Skallingen contained Denmark’s last minefield from World War II. The minefield consisted of approx. 72,000 mines. In 2012, the mines were cleared, and there is now free access to the area.

Trips

It is ideal to set out on a hike in the inviting natural surroundings. However, there are no marked hiking trails, so you have to explore on your own. At the many tables and benches in the area, you can enjoy your packed lunch with a magnificent view.

An obvious walk is called “Siberia there and back”. This is a 7-kilometre circular route, where there is a chance to see seals and numerous bird species.

Along the coastline of Skallingen, you can go amber hunting and hopefully find a piece or two. The amber is often hidden in the seaweed that has washed up on the beach.

Dogs are not allowed on Skallingen, not even if they are on a leash. This rule has been introduced to protect the rich birdlife found on Skallingen.

Vandring til Langli

Øst for Skallingen i Ho-bugt ligger øen Langli.
