The lake re-emerged in connection with the restoration of the Skjern River. Among other plants, the rare aquatic plant floating water-plantain grows here, blooming in July and August with white carpets of flowers.
Skænken Lake often floods the path along a 100 m stretch. Here, bare feet or rubber boots may be required.
Birds
The white-tailed eagle has bred in the vicinity of the river valley since 2010 and is seen daily foraging in the area from Skænken Lake to Ringkøbing Fjord.
A pair of marsh harriers is often seen by the lake, and a population of up to 12 great white egrets inhabits the area around and west of Skænken Lake.
