Sculptures in the heath

Rudolph Tegner's Museum and Sculpture Park is not located like an ordinary museum on a street, but in the middle of the protected heathland of Rusland south of Dronningmølle. Here Tegner's large, dramatic figures stand out among heather, juniper and open hills, so that the art becomes part of the landscape rather than something you simply view from a distance.

A building like a treasure chest

The museum itself is almost as striking as the sculptures. You enter through a lower entrance hall and then meet the tall, almost windowless rooms, where the light mainly comes from above. The concrete building was designed by Tegner himself, and the material is not hidden away, but used as part of the experience: heavy, raw and solemn all at once.

Rusland close to the coast

The name Rusland may make the place sound more distant than it is. The area is close to the coast of North Zealand, yet still has a distinctive remote atmosphere with sandy ground, rolling heath and scattered vegetation. From the hills east of the museum there is a view over Kattegat, and the contrast between bronze figures, concrete and coastal light is a major part of the place's character.
