Sand, heather and low skies

At first glance, Risbøl Sande may seem almost empty. But precisely the open, poor and sandy character is the strength of the place: heathland, sand ridges, juniper, damp hollows and bare patches of sand lie close together, making room for nature that cannot tolerate shade and rich soil.

The experience is slow and understated. There is no classic attraction here demanding attention, but small changes in the terrain, the wind over the heather and plants right down at ground level. For birdwatchers, April and May can be interesting months, while the heather especially belongs to late summer.

A dune landscape far from the coast

Inland dunes are not coastal dunes gone astray. The sand comes from Ice Age deposits inland, and the acidic, leached sandy soil provides conditions for specialised species. That is why bare sandy ground here can be more valuable than it looks.

Fragile nature under open skies

Risbøl Sande does not stay open by itself. If conifers and overgrowth take over, the light, warmth and germination sites for the heath plants disappear. In the middle of the area stands a bench with a view of a small lake; a simple resting place in a landscape where poor soil is the very richness.
