Cobblestones, alleys and winding streets

Ribe is best experienced at a slow pace. The old town centre is compact, and the streets quickly shift between squares, narrow alleys, cobblestones and old façades. What makes it special is not one single house, but the whole: streets, buildings and small urban spaces that still keep the medieval town together.

The winding street layout does something quite concrete to the walk. Your gaze is not allowed to just run straight ahead; the next corner, gable or row of houses appears close by. That gives the town a different rhythm from newer, straight-lined town centres.

The cathedral as a landmark

Ribe Cathedral is located on the square and is the fixed point of orientation in the centre. The Commoners' Tower has no spire, is tall and visible from far away in the flat landscape, and from the top you get a view over the town’s rooftops and the marshland around Ribe.

The water’s edge in town

Ribe Å and the Ribe Å delta run through the old part of town. Along the water are sluices and watercourses that create breathing spaces between the dense streets. On Skibbroen stands the Storm Surge Column as a sober reminder that Ribe is not only cobblestones and half-timbered houses, but also a town by the water and with high water levels.
