The pump station is the largest of the five pump stations from the drainage project in the 1960s, and it is still in operation.
Inside the pump station there is an exhibition where you can see and touch the old pumps, and from the roof you have a magnificent view of the natural area.
By the car park, there are information boards with routes out into the area. There are many tables/benches and a couple of shelters nearby, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or grill your lunch.
Near the pumping station stands this memorial stone bearing the names of the local initiators of the drainage project and the text “Through unity, fertile land was won”.
But times have changed, and now the land won back then has been returned to nature.
A very popular attraction in Skjern Enge is the two cable ferries, which are the only access to the delta’s largest island, Kalvholm.
At the pumping station, the cable ferry "Blishønen" is ready to cross the river. It is self-service, and you sail by pulling the rope along the edge of the ferry. The ferries can carry up to 12 people at a time as well as bicycles. Life jackets are available on board.
Plads med 2 store sheltere, grillplads og muldtoilet. Ingen vand. Pladsen ejes af Naturstyrelsen og kan ikke reserveres.
Toilet findes tillige i pumpestationen 100m derfra.
Pumpestation Nord still drains the large field areas north of the dike. The areas were not included in the nature project, which was completed in 2002, and today they show what the landscape in the river valley looked like before the restoration project was carried out.
Stien går mod vest til Ringkøbing Fjord hvor Skjern Å har sit udløb. Åen transporterer årligt 25.000 m3 sedimenter, der gennem et par hundrede år har aflejret sig i og omkring fjorden og således skabt Danmarks eneste floddelta.
For enden af den 3 km lange sti, er der rejst et fugletårn med udsigt over fjorden. Der er også borde og bænke til at nyde den medbragte madkurv.
Kør over diget ved pumpestationen. Her finder du en stor parkeringsplads med tavler, der fortæller om området. Det er et godt sted at starte, hvis du vil gå ture i området.
