Portland Bog is the name of the westernmost part of Lille Vildmose. During the war, Aalborg Portland Cement bought a section of the bog in order to dig peat for the kilns. Due to drainage and peat digging, Portland Bog is today heavily overgrown and far from its natural appearance.
However, the extensive drainage is also destroying the natural raised bog vegetation in the untouched areas. To restore Portland Bog as a living bog, more than 200 sheet-pile walls and wooden sluices have been installed in the old drainage ditches, just as 182 hectares of overgrown bog have been cleared and 4.7 km of shelterbelts have been felled.
