Portland Bog

Out onto the wet bog surface

Portland Bog is one of the places in Lille Vildmose where you can get all the way out into the raised bog without ending up with wet shoes. The boardwalk crosses the swaying, wet bog surface, where the terrain does not invite detours. Here, it is precisely the path that makes the experience possible: a narrow, firm track through a landscape that otherwise prefers to be left to itself.

Small signs of life

Keep your eyes low along the way. The raised bog does not reveal itself with grand gestures, but in heather species, lizards, butterflies and the carnivorous plant sundew. Sound can also be part of the place; the crane's trumpeting and the curlew's whistling are mentioned as something you can often hear at Portland Bog.

A bog that brings the water back

The name Portland Bog comes from Aalborg Portland Cement, which bought the raised bog to extract peat for fuel. Peat cutting and drainage left clear traces, including long, water-filled peat pits in the terrain, and the bog became heavily overgrown with birch and pine. Today, nature restoration is about holding back the water and giving the sphagnum mosses better conditions, so the raised bog can once again become more alive than dried out.
