Ølstrup Church

The church is built of granite and brick. The nave and chancel are roofed with lead. The tower dates from 1949 and has a tiled roof.

The large burial mound in the churchyard appeals to the imagination. It is known that the gravedigger has encountered very large stones, so perhaps the mound conceals a dolmen or passage grave from the Stone Age.

Altarpiece by Emil Nolde

Emil Nolde painted the church’s altarpiece "Supper at Emmaus" in 1904. The painting, which was valued at at least 10 million, was stolen in March 2014. In 2018, the painting was found in Schleswig-Holstein and handed over to the Danish police. The National Museum of Denmark restored the painting, and on 1 December 2019 it was rededicated in the church.

Temporary altarpiece

After the disappearance of the Nolde painting from Ølstrup Church, a new altarpiece has now been inaugurated. This took place at the church service on the last Sunday in June 2014. The new altarpiece was painted by one of the parish’s own residents, Alice Ravnholt.
