Oksby Old Church was Denmark's last thatched church. In 1862, it was earmarked for demolition due to its poor condition and shabby interior. In 1888, funds were raised for a new church, and the last service in Oksby Old Church was held on Sunday, 31 May 1891. The following day, they began to tear the church down.
The church is now marked as an outline in gravel. The old peat embankment around the churchyard can still be seen.
In the protected churchyard, 26 men from Blåvand are buried, who perished during a rescue operation in 1843.
Oksby Old Church, interior looking east. Painting by M. Jepsen 1884, Varde Museum.
The painting of the interior is the main source for the church’s furnishings and offers a rare insight into a church interior completely untouched by later restorations. We see Renaissance pews as they looked before backrests were added to the seats in all the churches of the area at the end of the 19th century.
