Nysø Bathing Lake is located at Roustvej 106 in Varde Søndre Plantage, about 5 km south of Varde. Here you can swim in fresh water in the forest with an artificial sand beach and the option to combine your swim with a packed lunch, fire pit area and a short break by the shelter site.
The place is well suited for families because there is a toilet, water, tables/benches and a playground close to the lake. However, there is neither a bathing jetty nor changing facilities, and the access road to the beach, toilet and seating area is not suitable for prams, wheelchairs or people with walking difficulties.
Nysø is a former raw material extraction lake, and that is the most important thing to know before entering the water. The bottom drops steeply in places, and the water can quickly become both deep and cold; a diving survey has measured a depth of 6 meters only 8 meters from the shore.
Swimming is allowed throughout the lake, but the floating barrier in the northeastern part marks an area where the bottom slopes more gently down to about 2 meters. Do not swim alone, and children must be kept under constant supervision, as there is no lifeguard service.
Dogs must be kept on a leash at Nysø and are not allowed to swim in the bathing lake itself; dog swimming belongs in Hundesøen southwest of the large lake. SUP, canoe and kayak are only allowed one at a time, provided they do not disturb bathers. Fishing, motorboating and loud music do not belong at the quiet forest lake.
Nysø Shelter Site is located in a small clearing close to the bathing lake in Varde Søndre Plantation. The three shelters are not just numbers, but Mælkehatten, Støvbolden and Kantarellen, and each shelter can be booked for 4 people.
The site also has the campfire shelter Karl Johan, which is booked separately, as well as tables/benches, a playground, water and a toilet. Fires must be kept to the designated fire pits, dogs must be kept on a leash, and Nysø itself is not a dog bathing lake.
