Nørholm Watermill

During the summer months, the mill is open to the public on selected Sundays. The mill house is inhabited and private, so keep your distance, but take a walk around the woodland side of the lake.

It was a busy mill and the largest in Ribe County. In addition to serving the manor, it ground grain for 215 farms and 41 houses, covering an area of 6,593 tønder of land.

The current buildings date from the late 18th century, when the estate owner Rosenørn Teilmann carried out an extensive renovation.

Nørholm Watermill became unusable when, during the Second World War, Karlsgårde Hydroelectric Power Plant was expanded and most of the water was diverted away from the river and thus from the mill. Since then, it has been inactive, but has been maintained by the owners of Nørholm.

In 2008, a thorough restoration was begun with local craftsmen.

Karlsgårde Hydroelectric Power Plant has now been decommissioned and Varde Å has been returned to its original course, so water is once again being supplied to the mill. It can be seen in operation during limited time intervals in the months of July and August.

There are two fixed opening days: Mill Day, which falls on the 3rd Sunday in June, and Varde Å Day, which is held in August. For groups, visits can be arranged all year round by agreement with Nørholm Estate.
