Mariefestival is the story of Ansager when the town did not merely provide the roads and buildings for a festival, but became part of the format itself. The music moved between Mariehaven, Musik Galleriet, the hotel, inns, the church, the square, private gardens and smaller venues, so the audience followed the town just as much as the programme.
For anyone who wants to understand Ansager as a music town, the festival history is a good place to start. It shows a town where short distances, local initiative and many small stages were used as strengths rather than limitations.
The festival combined paid concerts with free stages, communal singing, food, accommodation, town life and volunteer work. The experience was not only about making it to the next concert, but also about the programme appearing in spaces that normally served entirely different purposes.
This gave Mariefestival a somewhat unconventional character: a music festival, a town celebration and a local identity project all at once. The sports field was used for camping, and both shops and the church were incorporated into the whole.
The original Mariefestival period has been reshaped, and the old festival website has been discontinued. Maries Kulturfestival is its successor, while the traces of Mariefestival now mainly remain in Ansager's places, names and musical self-image.
