Mandø

The island where the road disappears

Mandø lies in the middle of Wadden Sea National Park between Fanø and Rømø, southwest of Ribe. Even the arrival makes the island different: Låningsvejen across the seabed can only be used at low tide, and at high tide it is under water. That makes the tide more than just a view; it simply determines when you can get to and from the island.

Sky, dikes and birds

On Mandø, the landscape is open in the unmistakable Wadden Sea way: sky, flats, meadows, dikes and moving water. From the sea dike, especially at high tide, you can look for birds both outside the dike towards the Wadden Sea and on the meadows inside it. The meadows with lakes and marsh vegetation serve as breeding and foraging areas for ducks, geese and waders, among others.

A small island community in a World Heritage landscape

Mandø is part of the Wadden Sea, which UNESCO describes as the world’s largest unbroken system of tidal flats with sand and mud flats. The island has around 30 permanent residents, mainly gathered in Mandø By in the shelter of the dune ridge to the west. Among the nature, there are also signs of island life: a church, a mill, a storm surge column, a small museum and the option to rent bicycles. Here, World Heritage does not feel like a plaque, but like something that raises and closes the road twice a day.
