Short fjord trip with views, birdlife and wind; a calm contrast to the lighthouse dunes.
Lyngvig Lighthouse stands high in the dune landscape north of Hvide Sande, where the terrain is flat enough for the tower to seem even more prominent. From the top, the view opens out over Holmsland Klit, the North Sea and Ringkøbing Fjord – three very different West Jutland landscapes gathered in a single view.
The lighthouse is not just a tower. The area is connected by paths through the dunes, so a visit can continue out toward the beach. Close by the lighthouse also runs a cycle and hiking trail between Søndervig and Hvide Sande, part of the West Coast Trail and national cycle route no. 1.
Behind the lighthouse lies a grim coastal story: A fatal shipwreck off the West Coast showed that the stretch between the existing lighthouses was not covered well enough. Lyngvig Lighthouse was therefore built as yet another landmark for ships. The lighthouse is still in operation and sends its flash out over the dunes, while the area around the old lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s residence is today preserved as a cultural environment.
Around the lighthouse, visitors encounter a protected dune landscape with open formations, hollows and dune heath. It is a place where the view is wide, but the details lie low: marram grass, heather, crowberry and the traces of a coast that never quite stands still.
