Lydum Church

Layers in the walls

Lydum Church is not large, but it is densely packed with traces. From the outside, the story begins in the masonry: the Romanesque church was built of Rhenish tuff with smaller sections of brick, and the material makes it one of the northernmost West Jutland churches of its kind. Also look for the original south door and the bricked-up north door, which can still be glimpsed in the wall.

Inside the church

Inside, several periods meet at once. The altarpiece is an early Lutheran work from Copenhagen, and it is described as an early Reformation altarpiece with side wings, biblical inscriptions and an original Golgotha painting in the main panel. The church also contains a Romanesque granite baptismal font, a late Gothic altar set and a large modern fresco by Jens Urup with scenes from the life of Jesus.

The churchyard and its quiet use

The churchyard is worth noticing, not least because of the old grave monuments, cast-iron crosses and peasant gravestones that have been set into the dike. There are burial crypts in both the chancel and the tower, but it is not stated what visitors can normally access. Since 2012, Lydum Church has been an occasional church, so the site is not a centre for regular services, but is still used for special church ceremonies.
