Lønborg Church and Banke

View from the hill

Lønborg Church stands high on Lønborg Banke, and it is the landscape that speaks first. From here, Skjern Å Valley and the meadows spread out below the hill, with the meandering Skjern River below. In clear weather, the view reaches all the way to the dunes by the North Sea.

The place works well as a starting point for a trip in Skjern Enge: you get an overview before heading down into the flat, wet landscape. It is also a place where you can make do with a short stop and still get a sense of how large the valley is.

Inside the church

The church interior is worth taking in, not as decoration for the view, but as an experience in its own right. Lønborg Church is especially known for frescoes in the chancel, nave and sacristy, dated to the period 1485-1575. The motifs range from biblical scenes and the Last Judgment to more down-to-earth images from everyday life.

A hill with a long memory

Lønborg Banke lies south of Skjern Å Valley and belongs to the Varde Hills. Around 1000 years ago, Ringkøbing Fjord reached all the way in to the hill, so the view from here looked quite different. Today, the broad valley is a single vista combining nature restoration, a bird area and a cultural-historical landscape.
