Løgumkloster Church

Cistercian monks founded the monastery in 1173. Throughout the Middle Ages, the town of Løgumkloster grew up around the monastery and church. The location was ideal. In the many streams and large forests around the monastery, the monks could work with agriculture, fishing and milling. In the monastery garden, the monks grew medicinal herbs and vegetables such as parsley, rhubarb and carrots.

The Church

Løgumkloster Church was built during the period 1225-1325. The church is built with monk bricks, a type of brick larger than the bricks we use today. The Cistercians helped spread the use of these bricks.

Løgumkloster Church is considered to be among the most beautiful and significant church buildings from the Middle Ages.
