Manor landscape by the Varde River, a good historical and natural supplement to the mill area.
At Lætbæk Mill, the walk is small in scale but rich in change. The path follows the mill pond closely enough that the water is always part of the experience: first between the trees, then in open views, and again by the old mill buildings at the edge of the area.
This is not a place that makes a lot of noise with big attractions. The experience lies in the slow pace, in benches with a view, and in the feeling that the pond is not just nature, but the very reason the place exists.
Lætbæk Mill was originally a water mill and grain mill, but the area later developed a social life around the lake. Today the pavilion and summer restaurant are gone, so the history does not stand there as a backdrop. It is more discreetly present in the landscape: in the mill buildings, the pond and the old gathering places around the water.
Varde Municipality also highlights the place as a local cultural environment, where the mill pond is a vital part of its authenticity. That gives the short lake walk a different weight than an ordinary forest loop.
The area connects with paths toward the forest west of the lake and Kraruplund Forest to the east. The mill buildings are part of the cultural environment, but the experience for visitors is especially tied to the path, the water and the resting places around the pond.
Lætbæk Mill was originally a water mill and grain mill, but after milling ceased the place took on a different life as an excursion destination. In the mill house there was a summer restaurant right up until 1973, and the local archives mention Aksel Tranberg as the last restaurateur.
At the western end of the mill house, according to the archives, a wooden pavilion with a banquet hall was built in 1927. It is gone today, but it tells of a time when the mill pond not only drove the water wheel, but also attracted schools, parties, and summer guests.
The picnic shelter stands in a small forest clearing close to Lætbæk Mill Lake. It is octagonal, partly open, and furnished with tables and benches, shelter from the wind, and views of the forest and grassy area.
There is room for about 30 people, 4 wheelchair users, and a children's table for 6 children. The wide paths and the benches around the lake are part of the area's renovation in 2017-18. Parking is close by .
