Lemvig Museum

The real Lidenlund

Lemvig Museum is a good place to start if you want to understand why Lemvig can look like a cartoon town without actually being one. Henning Gantriis used the town as a clear inspiration for “Life in Lidenlund”, and in the series you can recognise, among other things, the church tower, Torvet, Vestergade, the harbour, Lystanlægget and Musiktribunen. The comic strip has no single hero, but a whole cast of characters from small-town life.

From the Ice Age to a trading town

The museum tells the wider story of the Lemvig area: ancient finds from local settlements, life after the Ice Age, fishing, farming, crafts, trade, and connections to the sea and across the plains of Jutland. There are also traces of the rugged landscape of West Jutland, where the North Sea, the Limfjord, heathland plains and fertile Ice Age landscapes have shaped everyday life.

Art, children and a garden

Local artists and cultural figures also feature at the museum, including Thøger Larsen’s study, works by Niels Bjerre and sculptures by Torvald Westergaard in the museum garden. Activities for children include giant jigsaw puzzles, writing on a blackboard with chalk, and a miniature version of 1950s Lidenlund, with costumes for dressing up as a doctor, editor or postman. The garden is open to the public and has places to relax, as well as the starting point of the Sculpture Trail.
