Medieval church at the seashore, offering a strong contrast to Lemvig’s town church.
Lemvig Church is not hidden away behind walls, but stands directly on the Town Square, where everyday life passes close by the door. Inside, the pace changes. The church interior is large, bright and regular, with tall whitewashed walls, vaults, a yellow brick floor and a remarkably uniform Rococo furnishing.
The special eye-catcher is Bodil Kaalund’s biblical paintings. They are not placed in just one spot, but spread across the altar, pulpit, galleries, doors and sacristan’s chair, so the Bible story is read around the room in pictures. The altarpiece shows Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, while the panels of the pulpit include, among others, The Good Shepherd and The Good Samaritan.
At the Romanesque granite baptismal font, the church’s longest continuity stands more quietly. It is the church’s oldest furnishing, decorated with a rope moulding at the top of the basin, and is still used for baptisms.
The church is open every day from 9:00-17:00, and visitors are welcome to enter the church interior and light a candle in the candle globe. Photography is stated to be allowed when no religious ceremonies are taking place. Groups of at least 15-20 people can contact the church office if they would like an introduction to the church, Kaalund’s paintings, or its renovation and history.
