La Seu - Palma's Cathedral

A Gothic space by the sea

La Seu is located in Palma's old town close to the sea, and the cathedral is hard to miss even before you are standing in front of it. Inside, it is especially the scale that strikes you: the central nave rises to around 44 meters and gives the space a vertical power that makes the cathedral more than just an impressive façade in the cityscape.

Art layer upon layer

The cathedral is Mediterranean Gothic, but it is not frozen in the Middle Ages. Antoni Gaudí reworked the interior space in the early 1900s, and Miquel Barceló's decoration of the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament is the most recent major artistic addition. As a result, the site can be read as a long conversation between Gothic architecture, liturgy, and more recent art.

Terraces and practical access

The tourist entrance is at the cathedral museum entrance on Plaza de la Seo. The standard ticket gives access to the cathedral and the Museum of Sacred Art, and an audio guide can be added. In season, the terrace tour offers a different angle on the building, with flying buttresses, the great rose window, the bell tower, Palma's skyline, and the sea close at hand. However, the terraces are not for everyone: they are not accessible to people with reduced mobility and are not recommended for those with vertigo or heart and respiratory conditions.
