Kongsdal Open Garden

Flowers, water and clipped shapes

Kongsdal Open Garden is a large visitor garden in the Funen landscape between fields and woodland. Here, the experience is not carried by a single view or one flowerbed, but by the shift between flowering plants, water and tightly shaped trees and shrubs.

In spring, rhododendrons are a clear feature, while the roses take over from June onwards. Perennials, roses and several plants that the garden itself describes as rare stand alongside the topiary elements, giving the garden a more cultivated expression than an ordinary country garden.

The lake as a calm centrepiece

In the middle of the garden lies the lake with a waterfall and fountain. It makes the garden a place where the sound of water is part of the visit, not just a detail in the layout. Around the garden there are benches, tables and other seating areas, so the visit can be taken in small stages.

Small discoveries along the way

The garden also contains more unexpected features: memorial stones from the Second World War and owls made by the artist Allan Bo. Visitors may enjoy their own food and coffee in the garden’s corners or in the small “hen house”, while a self-service stall sells coffee, tea and ice cream. It is a garden where the pause is almost as carefully planned as the planting.
