Klostermølle Paper Mill

By the water and the canal

Klostermølle lies where the Gudenå meets Mossø, with the buildings close to water, meadows, wetlands and forest. It is a place where a short walk can quickly change character: from the old mill canal in dense alder woodland to open views across the lake and onward up towards Sukkertoppen.

Along the Klosterkanalen, birdlife is part of the experience. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a kingfisher or dipper, and at one end of the drying barn there is a bird tower with views over Mossø.

Industrial traces in wood and stone

The large drying barn is the most striking remnant from the factory period. Inside the building, you can still read how cardboard and paper were hung up to dry, and by the mill building the heavy grindstones remain as a very tangible reminder of the wood-grinding mill.

However, the site’s history does not begin with the factory. Beneath the present buildings lay Voer Abbey, and the dug canal still tells of the monks’ efforts to control the water for the watermill.

Short walks with views

Marked hiking routes start from Klostermølle, including routes along the Gudenå and up over Sukkertoppen through Højlund Skov. At the top, the landscape opens out towards Mossø, the Gudenå valley, Salten Langsø and the hills around Himmelbjerget.
