90 mVarde Deanery can be read as a West Jutland map of granite, tuff, brick, sand and legends. The guide is intended as inspiration for selected church stops, not as an official deanery overview. It is especially useful for the culturally and historically curious visitor choosing places where the building, landscape and local stories offer something to look out for.
The range is the real strength: Romanesque village churches, coastal churches with troubled predecessors, a market-town church in the middle of Varde and newer churches from the growth of heathland and railway towns. Aal Church stands out with its dramatic horseman frieze, Henne Church with its rich medieval furnishings, and Sct. Jacobi in Varde tells of a market town that once had more than one parish church.
In other places, it is the small, unusual traces that stay with you: carved stones and legends at Ølgod Church, the tides at Janderup, medieval furnishings in Vester Starup and Skovlund Church as a young church deliberately designed in medieval style.
There are no consolidated opening hours in the material, so some churches should be planned as exterior stops unless local information says otherwise. Many of the stories can, however, be read from the churchyard, masonry, spires and landscape; often it is precisely the small details that reveal the larger history.
