Harvest Day at Karensminde

The scythe first, the machine afterwards

On Harvest Day, the Museum Farm Karensminde turns into a workplace in the fields. Karensminde’s Friends bring the harvest to life, so children and adults can follow the work from the first strokes of the scythe until the grain is tied into sheaves.

It is a rather simple but effective history lesson: First you see human muscle power and the repeated strain. Later the old harvesting machines come into play, and the difference between scythe and machine becomes clear without many explanations.

Animals, horse-drawn cart and farm life

Harvest Day is connected with the rest of the museum farm. Karensminde has historical livestock breeds, and the farm’s barns, fields and outdoor areas make agricultural history more tangible than a text on a wall.

When the fieldwork is finished, the horse-drawn cart takes visitors for rides. It is a calm ending to a day where much of the experience lies precisely in the pace: the sound of tools, animals on the farm and people working with their hands.

Break between the fields

On special activity days, the coffee room is open, and for Harvest Day there is also a waffle stall. Karensminde is located on the meadowlands by Grindsted Å, where hay and cattle were historically the basis of the meadow farms’ operation. Here, the waffle almost makes the most sense after seeing what a harvest day could demand.
