Hunting Lodge by Stadil Fjord

Birdlife right from the start

At Jens Bjerg-Thomsen’s hunting lodge, you are close to some of what Vest Stadil Fjord is known for: shallow water, reed beds, meadows, and birds in large flocks. Mellemdyb lies close to the lodge, and this is exactly where the view is often good. The reed bed by the parking area has been removed to provide a better view over the area and keep overgrowth down.

The lodge and the path to the bird hide

The old hunting lodge has been preserved and is open to the public with a small exhibition about the area and the hunting writer Jens Bjerg-Thomsen. The black-and-white photos give the place a different tone from an ordinary birdwatching spot: here you also sense the local story of people, hunting, and the fjord landscape.

From the parking area, you can follow the sign toward the lookout tower to a small black wooden house with a thatched roof, arranged as a bird hide. Openings at different heights make it possible to watch the birdlife from shelter, even when the westerly wind picks up.

Good to know about considerations

Vest Stadil Fjord is a game reserve, and the area is first and foremost arranged with the birds in mind. Dogs must be kept on a leash, and fishing and bathing are not allowed in the fjord. That says a lot about the place: here, silence and distance are part of the experience.
