Gammel Hviding Engsø lies as a low, open expanse of water in the marsh just east of the Rejsby dike. From the road you have a view over the lake, but from the dike the landscape opens up in both directions: in over the dike lake and out towards the foreland and the Wadden Sea.
The place is especially worth knowing for birdwatchers. Among the birds breeding here are oystercatcher, lapwing, redshank and little ringed plover, while geese, ducks and waders may appear on migration and while resting. In the reedbed, bittern can be heard, and sedge warbler and southern bluethroat can be seen if timing and patience are on your side.
The meadow lake is also called Gl. Hviding Klæggrav or Rejsby Klæggrav. It is not an old natural hollow, but was created by digging clay for dike reinforcement. The result is a man-made lake, shaped with a winding shoreline and small islands, giving the birds more peace and more edges to use.
Access is from route 11 between Ribe and Skærbæk via Høgsbrovej and Gl. Hvidingvej towards the dike. Parking is available by the dike after Hviding Sdr. Rampe. The area is also mentioned as having a bird hide, but precise access, distance and facilities are not stated here.
