19 kmBallum Lock
Nearby lock with the same meeting of dike, water, and birdlife.
Vidå Lock is located in Det Fremskudte Dige near Højer and is Tøndermarsken’s outermost lock toward the Wadden Sea. It is an easy place to stop: the lock is close to the parking area, the surface from the parking area to the lock and viewpoint is described as firm and good, and there are several possibilities for a break.
Here the marsh’s engineering is very visible. The water from the Vidå River is led out through the dike, while the lock gates close automatically when the water level in the Wadden Sea is higher than the water level in the Vidå River. From the area you can see the lock, the dike, the Wadden Sea, the marsh landscape, birdlife and the sheep that keep the dikes down through grazing.
There is interpretation at the lock, and the lock tower is described as freely accessible. However, the material does not state fixed opening hours, so the tower should not be planned as a time-specific indoor visit.
Margrethe Kog is located by Vidå Lock and is protected. There are access restrictions, and public access is limited to the area north of the canal that carries the water from the Vidå River out to the lock. That makes signage and access boundaries more than just formalities here. The area is said to have rich birdlife, including flocks of barnacle geese in spring and autumn.
