Hjerpsted Church

Hjerpsted Church stands all alone west of the village of Hjerpsted. The church is situated high on Hjerpsted hill island, with a fantastic view over the Wadden Sea and views of Sylt and Rømø, which can be seen significantly better from here than from Hjerpsted beach. A path leads from the church to the beach.

The church and churchyard are surrounded by a fieldstone wall, supported by sloping earthen embankments, probably to withstand wind and weather and to keep cattle out. It was built in the Romanesque style in the 1130s from granite ashlar. The tower was built later, around the year 1500. It is constructed with reused granite stones at the bottom and brick at the top. The roof is made of lead.

The church and churchyard appear welcoming and well maintained. The church is open during the gravedigger’s working hours.
