Hjedding Dairy Museum, just south of Ølgod, is part of the Museum of Varde Town and Surroundings. At the inauguration of the dairy on 10 June 1882, it was the world’s first cooperative dairy.
The drafting of the dairy’s articles of association became the foundation for many other cooperative enterprises, and the farmers’ idea had far-reaching consequences for Danish agriculture. This is where the cooperative movement began, which later became highly significant for agriculture.
Hjedding Cooperative Dairy appears as it did when it was first put into use and shows, in all its simplicity, how the small, original Maglekilde centrifuge and the butter churn, both powered by a steam engine, revolutionized Danish dairy production.
Access to the unmanned museum is via a code, which can be obtained by making a phone call on site.
