Himmelbjerget rises high above Julsø, where the eye takes in the lake, the hills, and the woodland and heath landscape of the Lake Highlands all at once. It is one of those places where the view is not just a point on a map, but something you feel in the terrain: the paths climb, the landscape drops steeply, and open vistas give way to forest and heather.
At the top, the Himmelbjerg Tower stands as the clearest landmark. It gives an extra lift above the landscape and is also linked to the site’s national history, because the tower was erected in honour of the Constitution and King Frederik 7. Around Himmelbjerget there are memorial stones for people of importance to the place, including Steen Steensen Blicher, who is associated with the tradition of public meetings here.
In the summer season, the trip can begin down by the jetty, where scheduled boats from Silkeborg and Ry call. From there you walk up through the heather-covered hills towards the tower, and the climb is a real part of the experience. If you arrive by road, there is still good reason to choose footwear for the hills; the marked hiking routes in the area are very hilly.
