Himmelbjerget lies high above Julsø, where your gaze takes in the lake, the hills, and the forests and heathlands of the Søhøjland all at once. It is one of those places where the view is not just a point on a map, but something you feel in the terrain: the paths climb, the landscape drops steeply away, and open vistas are replaced by forest and heather.
At the top stands Himmelbjergtårnet as the most visible landmark. It gives an extra lift above the landscape and is also tied to the site’s national history, because the tower was erected in honor of the Constitution and King Frederik 7. Around Himmelbjerget there are commemorative stones for people of importance to the place, including Steen Steensen Blicher, who is associated with the tradition of public gatherings here.
In the summer season, the trip can begin down by the landing stage, where excursion boats from Silkeborg and Ry dock. From there, you walk up through the heather-covered hills toward the tower, and the ascent is a real part of the experience. If you arrive by road, there is still good reason to choose your shoes according to the hills; the marked hiking routes in the area are very hilly.
