Helligåndskirken is located on Søndergade in Hvide Sande and is also called Hvide Sande Church. From the outside, you encounter a yellow-brick church in a Late Romanesque style; inside, the expression is more subdued with whitewashed walls, a flat beam ceiling, and a large, smooth oak cross on the altar.
It is not an old medieval church, and that is precisely what makes it interesting: it tells the story of a fishing town that got its own church after many years of work, fundraising, and applications. The form is traditional, but the story is modern and local.
Look up for the church ships. Here hang both “Fanny” and the fishing cutter “Jenny Skomager,” bringing the harbor and fishing right into the church interior. “Jenny Skomager” is not just decoration; it is connected to a story of shipwreck and to a sailor who survived it himself.
In front of the altar there is also a piece of local handiwork: an altar cloth embroidered by 27 women from Hvide Sande. Together with the church ships, it gives the church a sense of community rather than grand decoration.
The church is open daily, and admission is free as an attraction. At the same time, it is used for services and events, so the atmosphere in the room can depend on the day’s church life. One of the small details is the words “Give God’s peace its proper sound,” which recur in the church’s decoration and bell.
