Footbridge over Vonå

Across the river in open country

The footbridge over Vonå is not a place that calls attention to itself. It does something quieter: takes you across the river with dry feet between Hee and Holmsland, while the landscape lies flat and open around you.

For walkers and cyclists, it serves as a natural stopping point, especially if the trip starts from Hee and continues towards the Holmsland side. From here, you can either continue towards the North Sea or turn around and let the footbridge be the turning point of your trip.

A passage with a practical past

Vonå is the short water connection between Stadil Fjord and Ringkøbing Fjord, which is why the footbridge is located in a small place of great landscape significance. The water brings the fjord landscape together, while the bridge brings traffic together across it.

The local story makes the passage more down-to-earth than ceremonial. Grain from Holmsland had to be taken to the mainland to be milled, first by boat across the river and later via a wooden bridge. The footbridge was therefore not a decoration in the landscape, but a solution to a very concrete problem.

Good to know on your trip

The site can be reached from Hee Church via Agersbækvej and Voldbjergvej and onwards towards Vonå-engbroen. The nearest registered parking is at Roklubben Ringkøbing, but the immediate access, surface and suitability for prams or wheelchairs are not stated here. It is a small bridge with an unusually long memory.
