40 mGrocer and Consumer Cooperative in Skovlund
Describes Skovlund town centre as a cooperative-oriented trading place near the dairy site
On the old dairy site in Skovlund, there is today no factory building, but a cheese vat in granite. That makes the place a little special: You are not looking for a chimney, loading ramp or milk cans, but for a work of art that marks where the dairy stood, and why this particular spot became important to the town.
The cheese vat was created by sculptor Laila Westergaard and stands on Ole Flensted Plads. It is carved from Bornholm granite, and the decoration revolves around the local area, dairy production, everyday life and the passage of time. In the hollow there is a moving water feature that is meant to recall the surface of the whey during cheese production.
The story behind the place is about farmers, milk and shared operations. Cooperative dairies made it possible for milk producers to pool their efforts, own the dairy together and achieve better quality and sales. Skovlund Cooperative Dairy was part of the early West Jutland wave, where ideas from the first cooperative dairies were quickly turned into practical everyday life.
The nearby Byparken Skovlund offers a green stop with a playground, picnic tables, woodland and activity areas. On the square, however, it is the granite vat that keeps the dairy history alive, while the water surface hints at the work that once filled the place.
At four o’clock in the morning on 7 November 1897, Skovlund Cooperative Dairy burned to the ground. The chief constable examined the fire site and pointed to a crack in the chimney, but it turned out to be only in the plaster.
The cause was never established. On the other hand, rebuilding went quickly: in 1898 the dairy was back in operation on the same site, in the middle of the cooperative dairy wave that Skovlund had been part of since 1883.
The old cheese warehouse was not originally built for cheese. The building was originally a single story and belonged to Skovlund Grain Mill as the miller’s residence; later, the cheese warehouse got an apartment on the upper floor.
The building also shows how closely Skovlund’s cooperative life was linked. Skovlund Consumers’ Cooperative began its work here in 1888, and in 1916 both Skovlund Local Association and Skovlund Cooperative Bank were established. A small house, but with an unusually large number of beginnings in its walls.
