Market-town atmosphere, harbor, and art history make Kerteminde an obvious complement to Galleri Galschiøt.
Galleri Galschiøt is not located like a quiet museum in the city centre, but in an industrial district in Odense N, where the works are still being created. Here, the art is close to materials, tools and workspaces, and the visit is just as much about the process as about the finished sculptures.
The place is sculptor Jens Galschiøt’s workshop and museum. The area brings together, among other things, a workshop, bronze foundry, gallery shop, art schools, TV studios, sculpture park and an art gallery, so you move between several layers of the same artistic environment. That gives a different rhythm than a classic exhibition venue: the sculptures are not just placed on pedestals, but near the place where they can be cast, worked on and moved on.
Galschiøt’s art ranges from smaller forms to large politically charged sculptures and international happenings. His larger installations have been described as a form of street art in public space, often created to spark debate. This is also reflected in the gallery’s raw combination of workshop, gallery and sculpture park.
Behind the place lies a former industrial area, which Galschiøt took over and transformed into an art workshop, gallery, foundry and sculpture park. For that reason, the address feels more like a working art complex than like a neat museum building separated from production.
The gallery is the 400 m² art hall in Galschiøt’s working art universe on Banevænget in Odense N. Larger sculptures and art projects stand close to the workshop, foundry and sculpture park, so the exhibition does not feel separate from production.
The works can range from smaller sculptures to monumental installations, often with traces of Galschiøt’s political and international projects. The exhibition changes, because sculptures are loaned out and new ones are added.
