Along the Kongeå Trail there are a number of shelter sites where you can spend the night on your trip along the historic border by the Kongeå River. Right next to Frihedsbroen there is a shelter site with two shelters, each with room for 4-5 people. There is water, a toilet building and a campfire site, as well as table/bench sets. There is also space for tents at the site, and in the river there is a floating jetty for canoes.
It is free to use the shelter sites along the Kongeå Trail. The shelters cannot be booked in advance.
A few meters north of the Freedom Bridge lies the House of Freedom. It was a refuge for Hans Diderik Kloppenborg, who lived south of the Kongeå River. He bought the plot of land on the Danish side and built the fieldstone house in 1870. Here he could raise the Dannebrog without getting the Prussians on his back. At times he lived in the house for extended periods to avoid arrest, as he was a sworn opponent of the Prussians’ actions, which he did not hide, but instead spoke warmly in favor of Danish identity.
