Fanø's main attraction is the beach on the west side of Fanø. Here you will find a sandy beach more than 15 km long and, in some places, more than 1 km wide. There is room for everyone, whether you want to laze in the sun and swim, search for amber, surf, or try land sailing.
In the sea around Fanø, there is a large population of both harbour seals and grey seals. On the large sandbank southwest of Sønderho, up to 500 seals may gather in one place during the summer.
It is easy to get around the entire island by bicycle, or take a hike along the beach or through the old dune landscapes. You can also climb the 5 mountains or simply enjoy the salty sea air from the top of a dune.
The ferry to Fanø departs from Esbjerg every 20 minutes.
Hotel Kongen af Danmark, built in 1893, was the flagship and great pride of Fanø Vesterhavsbad. Despite this, over the years it was run with varying degrees of success and financial stability. In 1989, the hotel was demolished after having been neglected for several years.
Fanø Vesterhavsbad was also a popular excursion destination in the late 1960s.
Nordby Church is one of the island’s two churches, and like Sønderho Church it is also oriented crosswise, meaning wider than it is long, if you can put it that way.
It is a large red-brick church with a black slate roof. The pews are in two light blue shades with grey cushions. The low beamed ceiling is painted light grey, and the floor is laid with yellow tiles. It has a special baptismal font cast in bronze, which is said to originate from Rindby Church. A very beautiful and well-maintained church.
