Bagges Dæmning

Out between water and sky

Bagges Dæmning extends into the northern end of Ringkøbing Fjord, making the walk feel more like a passage through the fjord than along it. There is not much to distract the eye: expanses of water, low skies and long views towards Søndervig to the north and Ringkøbing to the southeast.

Today, the causeway is used by both walkers and cyclists, and its simple line through the landscape makes the place easy to take in. On days with activity on the fjord, kitesurfers can add a more restless layer to the view, while birdlife thrives on both sides of the causeway.

A causeway that did not conquer the fjord

The site's history is less polished than the view. The causeway was built as part of an attempt to drain the area, create more farmland and make it easier to cross the fjord. The project lasted only a short time: a storm broke through the causeway in two places, and the reclamation project was abandoned.

Today, the old breaches are part of the experience, because bridges were established in 2016, allowing the route to be used by pedestrians and cyclists again.

Birds, reed beds and murmuration

The area on both sides of Bagges Dæmning has been described as an important resting and feeding area for several bird species. In late summer and early autumn, large flocks of starlings may settle in the reed beds on the eastern side, suddenly creating a dark, moving pattern above the fjord.
