Augustiana is located by Augustenborg Castle and Augustenborg Fjord, where the art hall and art park share an address with old palace buildings and a park area that slopes down toward the water. Here it is not only the exhibition spaces that carry the art; works and projects continue outside among trees, lawns and views of the fjord.
The setting is part of the original Augustenborg Castle. The White Palace and the Red Palace are not neutral museum spaces, but buildings with ducal history, a later past as a hospital, and now a new role as a place for professional contemporary art. In the White Palace, Princess Louise Christine Caroline according to the Augustenborg Guide hosted the study circle “Stoaen”, where art, philosophy, politics and astronomy were discussed; a rather fitting prehistory for a house that is still used for ideas and images.
The park is a peaceful place to linger, even without a ticket and without having to catch a specific exhibition time. The art park is open 24/7 all year round, while the art hall’s opening hours vary and should be checked on the site’s own page. God Adgang describes the park with large trees, lawn, benches by the fjord and tables/benches behind the art hall, but the park is not laid out for wheelchair users. From the benches by the water, the bird reserve lies on the other side of the fjord as a quiet counterpart to the art.
