Kingfisher by Ansager Å

A blue flash over the stream

At Ansager Å, the experience is not about covering a long distance, but about walking slowly enough to notice what is almost gone again. The kingfisher may sit completely still on a branch above the water and plunge-dive for small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. Just as often, you first spot it as a quick, low flight over the surface of the water.

Where to look

Keep an eye on branches, roots, and small lookout posts close to the water. The bird is brightly colored, but can still be difficult to spot because it sits still and close to the edges of the stream. Its call is described as a sharp “Ziii”, often heard just as the bird disappears away down along the watercourse.

A river landscape with consideration

Ansager Å is described as an unregulated watercourse through woodland and meadow, and this kind of natural river course can create banks and slopes that the kingfisher uses as nesting sites. For precisely that reason, distance is important: avoid trampling around on banks or places where birds may be breeding. Here, the best observation is often the discreet one — a second of turquoise-blue light over dark water.
