Albercutx Watchtower stands high on the Formentor peninsula, where cliffs plunge dramatically towards the sea and the landscape opens up in several directions. From here, you can look towards Cap de Formentor, Illot del Colomer, Pollença Bay, Alcúdia Bay and the Serra de Tramuntana — a place where the view is not only wide-ranging, but also explains why this particular summit was chosen as a lookout post.
As of 28 November 2023, access to Talaia d’Albercutx itself was temporarily restricted due to deterioration and the risk of collapse. This means visitors should respect signage on site and regard the tower as a vulnerable cultural monument, rather than a ruin that can necessarily be entered.
During the summer period, traffic on the Formentor road Ma-2210 is regulated from 15 May to 18 October, between 10:00 and 22:00. Bus route 334 serves the Formentor peninsula and stops, among other places, at Mirador del Colomer, which is also the starting point for the access road towards the tower.
The tower formed part of Mallorca’s network of coastal towers against piracy. In the event of danger, the guards could pass smoke signals by day and fire signals by night from tower to tower, so a threat on the coast quickly became an alarm inland. The site later also gained military importance as an observation post, and traces of more recent military use can be found at the tower, including drawings of aircraft on the walls.
