Albercutx Watchtower

Views from the northern tip

Albercutx Watchtower stands high on the Formentor peninsula, where the cliffs drop dramatically towards the sea and the landscape opens up in several directions. From here you can orient yourself towards Cap de Formentor, Illot del Colomer, Pollença Bay, Alcúdia Bay and the Serra de Tramuntana — a place where the view is not only wide, but also explains why this particular summit was chosen as a lookout post.

Pay attention to access and traffic

Access to Talaia d’Albercutx itself was, as of 28 November 2023, temporarily restricted due to deterioration and the risk of collapse. This makes the site a place where you should respect the signage on site and regard the tower as a vulnerable cultural trace, not as a ruin you can necessarily enter.

During the summer period, traffic on the Formentor road Ma-2210 is regulated from 15 May to 18 October, 10.00-22.00. Bus line 334 serves the Formentor peninsula and stops, among other places, at Mirador del Colomer, which is also the starting point for the access road towards the tower.

An alarm system of smoke and fire

The tower was part of Mallorca’s network of coastal towers against piracy. In times of danger, the guards could send smoke by day and fire by night from tower to tower, so that a threat on the coast quickly became an alarm inland on the island. Later, the site also gained military importance as an observation post, and around the tower there are traces of more recent military use, including drawings of aircraft on the walls.
